Around 2000, health prevention professionals had the impression that young people and adolescents from the Euregio Maas-Rhine (EMR) were using more alcohol and drugs than before. This use was partly taking place in neighbouring countries, as young people were increasingly crossing borders in their leisure time. 18 organisations from the EMR decided to investigate and tackle this behaviour together.
This cooperation in the project Risk Behaviour among Adolescents, which started in 2001, is the basis on which euPrevent was further developed. The partners at the time still work together under the Addiction programme.
The euregional network was further expanded, also on other health topics. This resulted in the start of two new projects in 2008 and 2009, which formed the basis for the Overweight and Infectious Diseases programmes.
The explosive growth of the network created the need for a sustainable form of support. The euPrevent Foundation was founded in 2010 and since 2015 the partners have also been supported by the euPrevent support office.
