The project partners of the Interreg V-A EMR project, ‘The impact of COVID-19 on the Euroregion Meuse-Rhine’, would like to invite you to the final conference on Thursday 16 December 2021.
In order to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, all EU countries have been taking different measures to protect their national interests. It would seem that people living in border regions like in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion (EMR) are more heavily affected by these various national measures as their life has always been based on the cross-border element and this was restricted by national measures to tackle COVID-19. Is this assumption true and what are the exact impacts of COVID-19 in border regions like the EMR? This is the goal of the project euPrevent COVID-19: to examine the spread of COVID-19 in the population of the EMR in relation to the various national infection prevention measures. This should form the basis for monitoring the disease and imposing or lifting certain measures. This project was thus developed to collect data on the prevalence of antibodies against COVID-19 and how this relates to population behaviour in all three EMR countries.
The aim of the project is to assess the impact of COVID-19 on a cross-border region such as the EMR. This can be a showcase for other border regions in the EU, or – even more broadly – worldwide. The partner organisations involved are GGD Zuid Limburg (Public Health Department South Limburg), euPrevent Foundation, Maastricht UMC+, Gesundheitsamt des Kreises Düren (Health Department of Düren District), Gesundheitsamt des Kreises Heinsberg (Health Department of Heinsberg District), Gesundheitsamt der StädteRegion Aachen (Health Department of the Aachen Municipality), Sciensano, and the German-speaking Community of Belgium.
This project consists of two parts: in the quantitative research, in two rounds blood samples were collected and analysed to determine the development of COVID-19 antibodies among EMR citizens. This was then related to the different measures taken, vaccination behaviour, and mobility restrictions in the EMR countries; in the qualitative research, regional citizen summits were organised to gain insight into how people experienced COVID-19.
At this conference, the results of this project will be presented and the report and recommendations will be discussed with experts from the whole of Europe and beyond.
